Although one of Detroit's legends has physically been gone for more than four years J. Dilla's presence looms large. Simply calling him a Hiphop producer doesn't do his memory justice. He was a musical communicator that was fluent in many genres. His eclectic production track record is a long list of top industry artists (and some people you have never heard of) that refuses to be classified by superficial borders. His ability and appreciation for beat making and attention to detail should be a required course in any production class. In the years since his passing there has been a lot of love shown for his work and memory, and rightfully so. Hopefully we will continue to show love for his body of work and to appreciate the work of those artists who defy trends and bubble gum radio jingles long before they take their final rest.
